"A Christmas Carol" Pop-Up Book Review.

I love the story of the Christmas Carol as told by Charles Dickens.    I grew up watching the Mr. Magoo version of the movie which I loved and which horribly dates me!   It's a great story that tells of the power of love and devotion and shows that redemption is possible for even the seemingly coldest and hardest of hearts.

I was lucky enough to receive a BEAUTIFUL pop up version of A Christmas Carol.  Unfortunately the photos can't show the elaborate pop up or the depth that occurs when you open the pages.   There are 6 fantastic pop ups and on each of five pages there's a small book that you can read to tell the story.

This beautiful re-imagining of Charles Dickens's timeless fable, A Christmas Carol: A Pop-Up Book features artist Chuck Fischer's richly painted depictions of the tale of Ebenezer Scrooge and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, brought to life in intricate pop-up scenes by paper engineer Bruce Foster. The entire text of A Christmas Carol is reproduced in five removable, illustrated, keepsake booklets. An introductory booklet provides a biography of Dickens and an illustrated feature on the enduring appeal of this beloved story. The perfect gift, A Christmas Carol, now in pop-up form, will brighten the holidays for young and old.

This would be a beautiful book to have to read to your own children at Christmas or would also make a lovely gift for a child or a family.    The book can be bought at most bookstores and also through Amazon

Thanks to Hachette Books for allowing me to review this book.    You can read more about it and watch a video that better illustrates the pop ups on their site here.

Walkers Shortbread Holiday Recipes and a Giveaway!

Have you ever had Walkers Shortbread products?   If not, you're missing out on a great treat.    I've blogged before about my family's love of their products.    We especially like their individual two packs of fingers or chocolate chip cookies.    They're great for lunch bags or I sent them along as snacks when my son went to Europe this past summer and my daughter interned in Washington, D.C.   They're much better than the usual cookies you find in stores.

I was pleasantly surprised to be contacted by Walkers and asked to review their products and make a few recipes with their products.    They sent me several of the simpler recipes to try because I think they'd heard of my famous cooking (in)abilities.    Yet I managed to make tasty treats anyway!

I received their Shortbread Fingers which I already love!   They're so rich and buttery tasting and are great plain or I like them dipped into my hot tea or coffee.    I also used them to make the Caramel Nut Bars recipe off of their site.

Caramel Nut Bars

1 cup caramels
1 tbls. water
8 Walkers Shortbread Fingers
1/2 cup chopped cashews

In a heavy saucepan, combine water and caramels over low heat to melt the caramels. Stir frequently until smooth. Dip the shortbread fingers in the hot caramel sauce, turning until coated. Roll in the chopped cashews and place on wax paper.  P.S.   My daughter's job was the rolling in the cashews....just saying :)

The Mini Oatcakes were new to me, and are also  tasty treats, especially when served with cheese or other toppings.    I used these to make the following recipe off their site.

Blue Cheese Topped Oatcakes

Walkers Mini Oatcakes
Blue Cheese
Cream Cheese
Apples
Toasted Walnuts

Blend 1/2 and 1/2 blue cheese and cream cheese.  Spread that on top of the cracker, with a slice of apple and toasted walnuts.

I received several other items to sample also.    One was the Strathspey pictured at left which is a traditional  fruitcake topped with marzipan and sugar icing.   This is also tasty, rich and sweet.

Both of the recipes would be perfect to serve for a holiday gathering of any sort.   They would be great for Christmas parties or New Year's gatherings.   The other products such as the Strathspey or the Glenfiddich Highland Whiskey Cake (I can't wait to try this!) would be perfect also.

Thanks to Iza and Walkers Shortbread, one lucky reader of my blog will receive three of these products to try themselves.    You will receive the Shortbread Fingers, the Mini Oatcakes, and the Strathspey.   Let the salivating begin!

Set of 16 New Years Photo Cards Giveaway!!

After the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season, it's time for all of us to sit back and reflect on the good and the bad of the past year.    In my own life I had many ups.  My son got to take a WONDERFUL and educational 10 day trip to Europe this past summer, and my brilliant college daughter did a sponsored internship in Washington DC, which was quite an adventure for her.   My husband has been able to keep his job in an unstable economy, and I started my blog here which I had been wanting to do for quite a while.

On the negative side, we're stressing again this year as we try to select a college for my senior son to attend, filling out admission and scholarship applications (I'm certainly glad this is the last kid I have to do this for!!!) and my deceased father's only sibling passed away a few months ago.    As I was visiting with my two cousins, my uncle's children, I was thinking how I hadn't seen them since my own parent's deaths, and sadly realizing I might not see them again.   My own health has continued to basically suck this year, and my husband's back problems have returned.

But overall I would call it a good year.    Resolutions for me will probably be the same they are every year....and will probably have the same pathetic outcome as in previous years.

At Pear Tree Greetings, you can send some cards to your friends and relatives reflecting on your New Years Resolutions or just wishing them a successful New Year.   So this month I'm giving away, courtesy of Pear Tree, a set of 16 Photo New Years Cards which you can personalize with your own resolution.

Balloonatics: The Collectors Set DVD Review and Giveaway

    Meet the Balloonatiks!

Looking for a fun DVD for your kids?
One that will have them laughing out loud?

The Balloonatiks are 5 formerly ordinary teens transformed into balloon like superheroes. Flator, Squeeker, Airbrain, Sparky, Bouncer and Leaky star in a series of high-flying adventures in Hot Air City.

My own children are too old for the escapades of the Balloonatiks gang, so I shared this DVD with younger family members.    They enjoyed it and laughed quite a bit.    The DVD is fairly short and held their attention span.    I would estimate the DVD to be most appropriate for children 3 to 8 years of age.    It's produced in state-of-the-art animation.

Five normal kids are accidentally gooped in a science experiment that goes awry at the Hot Air City Fair, and wind up with stretchy, bouncy, rubbery qualities that make their lives, zany, wild and balloony. Now, all their problems from squabbling siblings to schoolyard rivalries are given an added twist. On top of all their previous concerns about fitting in, making friends and establishing their own identities, their lives are complicated by the fact that they are no longer typical kids. They are Balloonatiks®, with odd and unexpected abilities. But they are still kids at heart. What mattered to them before the accident still matters to them now, only now they have rubbery ways of tackling any challenge that is presented to them. Sometimes these abilities help them solve problems with ease; sometimes they only complicate things even more. And they have one problem they never had before – how do you blend in with all the other kids when you’re a Balloonatik?     Bouncy, stretchy, loopy, and all ‘gooped’ up, Meet The Balloonatiks!

You can vist their site or connect with them on Facebook
or you can purchase the DVD from Amazon.

Win It:   David and Animagic Entertainment Group have been generous and offered one of my readers a copy of the DVD "Balloonatics:  The Collectors Set".
