Money and Making Change (Educational) DVD Giveaway

Rock N Learn has made a business of making learning for children fun.    By setting lessons to music and introducting fun characters that children can identify with, the kids will learn without even knowing they're getting a lesson.   Their new DVD "Money & Making Change" is the latest award winning addition.   In it, the characters Penny and Bill teach children all about counting money and making change.   The DVD is 57 minutes long and recommended for age 6 and up, or elementary aged children.

From their site:
Rock ‘N Learn’s Money & Making Change offers a fun learning experience for elementary-age children. The characters in the DVD, Penny and Bill, know how to shake things up when it comes to counting money and making change. Cool songs and games give plenty of practice with real-world skills. Even preschoolers love the adorable characters Penny and Bill and begin to recognize coins. Students learn about coins and how they relate to one another, strategies for counting coins and bills, “skip counting,” expressing money in written terms, strategies for making change, and more.  You’ll have lots of fun as you gain valuable skills you can bank on.

Here's the gist:

* We'll send a package to the first 2,500 teachers who sign up
* Up to 30 cards per classroom
* Free to you and your students

At Pear Tree, we believe in the power of connection, especially by sharing a handwritten note. Through this partnership with Operation Gratitude, we encourage teachers all across America to share with their students the value of saying thank you. Together, let's lift the morale of the men and women in our military. After all, who doesn't like a smile?

Attention Teachers
This is a great opportunity to teach the kids in your classroom a lesson in listening, writing and creativity; these cards are meant to be colored! Most of all, it's an opportunity to teach a lesson in gratitude to others so far away. Get out the globe...show them how far away our service men and women really are. Don't be shy-you can send a note too!

How Does it Work?

  1. Fill out the form through the link below.
  2. Pear Tree will send a packet of 30 cards, at no cost, to the first 2500 teachers who sign up.
  3. Use the cards in your classroom, insert them in the enclosed envelope, and send the cards to Operation Gratitude (postage not included).
  4. Operation Gratitude will send the cards in a package to our men and women in the military.

Here's a link to the signup.

Here's a link to the FAQ

Here's a link to Operation Gratitude who will mail the cards to our service members oversea.

Spread the word and let's show our gratitude to our service members this holiday season.
Help put a smile on the men and women serving overseas who cannot be with their families this holiday season.

Thanks to Pear Tree Greetings for providing the cards for this!

AMAZING Borders Deals

My whole family loves Borders.  We could go there everyday and browse if we had the time.   Currently there are some great deals and coupons out for there.   Get an almost free cookbook.  Read below for the details on how to get this.   Think Christmas shopping!   Or get 40% off a kids toy or gift.  And get a free coffee or tea while there shopping for your deals!    Check out all the coupons below and enjoy!!

First off....Buy a cookbook and get back a $10 coupon for another purchase in the future.    You can also use a coupon to BUY the cookbook which makes many of them barely over $10 or some even under.   So you can essentially get a free or almost free cookbook!   Good through Nov. 8th.

Then coupons for an addition percentage off the cookbook you buy.   There is one for 40% and another for 33%.   Obviously the 40% would be better, but I think you may not be able to use that one...not sure and some people are saying only the 33% off will work with the cookbook deal.   So I'd take both and  have the 33% off one with me in case.    Both of the additional percentage off coupons are for Borders Rewards members, but you can quickly sign up online or even at the register when you get ready to check out.

Also you can get 40% off a kids toy or game with this coupon.

Then last, get your free small coffee or tea from the Borders Cafe  to drink while you're there. coupon here

So follow the instructions, print out your coupons, and have a fun day shopping and sipping at Borders!

Carolina Pad 17 College Planner Review and Giveaway!

Do you or someone you know have a child heading off to college next year?   Or do you want to get a head start on planning for your younger high school child?    I have a child currently in college and a high school senior, so I consider myself an experienced member of the college planning crew.    I remember with my oldest how incredibly stressful it was on both her and me.   There would be days we were both on edge and feeling overwhelmed and trying frantically to stay on top of everything that had to be done.

It's been easier this time around for me.   We're looking at many of the same colleges we did a few years ago, and we've learned the hard way what not to do.    Plus I have been given a planner by Carolina Pad to try out and review that has made the process so much simpler.   It helps keep my notes organized in one place (instead of the dozen college folders each school gave us last time!) and I can easily keep track of deadlines, contact names, website addresses, etc.

Planning Calendar and Test Scores Record

  • Included in the binder at the front is a timeline that offers lots of helpful tips for those that are overwhelmed by the process.   There are hints for things to do from getting letters of recommendation (early!), making sure transcripts are complete and accurate, attending college fairs, and planning college visits.
  • The next section is a personal profile where the student can think about what they want to major in, what size school they would like, if they are interested in athletics or extracurriculars, etc.
  • Next is 12 months of calendars for keeping track of appointments, deadlines and then the text score page (shown above)
  • A page to list schools by "reach", "target" and "safety" and another for chance of acceptance at those schools based on GPA and test scores.
  • Many pages for essay brainstorming including some prompts/ideas to get you started.   I wish we had this when my daughter applied.    Every time she had to write an essay she'd stress so much and it was like she'd never written one before.
  • A master application checklist (have you sent application, transcript, etc) and letter or recommendation record.
  • Comparison chart of basic info on the colleges you're considering.   This is important.   You're not always comparing apples to apples.   Sometimes it's apples to oranges.   One school may offer more scholarship money, but the tuition is so high it still costs more.   Or in my daughter's case, she wanted to continue orchestra in college, was an honors student, and wanted to major in biology or biochemistry; so we looked at music programs in addition to honors programs/honors housing, and her major.
  • Financial aid, scholarships, loans info.
  •  And my FAVORITE part......The individual college breakdowns.    When we'd visit colleges we'd frantically take notes and scribble on pieces of paper that were scattered all over our house.  Here each college has pages of information from their average tuition/housing costs, to thoughts on the dorms, the food, the community, and their own deadlines and websites and contact people.    VERY helpful having all the schools in one place and in such an organized fashion.
Sample Pages From Individual College Visit
        •  There are also 8 tab dividers to separate colleges, labels, and an accordion file at the back for loose papers.

        Expandable File for Loose Papers

So if you're looking for a wonderful tool to make all your college planning easier and more organized, then check out the Carolina Pad 17 College Planner.   As someone who has been there/done that, and is now doing that again, trust me when I say that it will make your search process much easier.
